I watched Maryada Ramanna, a comedy and a family entertainment movie in Telugu. A lot of my friends who watched the movie loved it. The common theme that emerged from them was; go without any expectations and you will absolutely love the movie. Here are the 5 things I liked about the movie.
1) The story of family feud is not new to Indian movies and Tollywood. Numerous very successful movies have been made on this subject. The movie mixes the ideals of revenge and family honor with contradicting ideals of Guest is God (Atithi devo bhava) and the house is a temple (ghar ek mandir). What happens when the enemy is unwittingly made the guest or Atithi. I liked the treatment of this age old concept that converted the situation to a hilarious comedy. Hats off the director for making it all work.
2) The songs were incredible and tied in very well with the mood of the movie. The train song was the highlight for me. All the other songs are pictured very well and contribute their fair share towards the success of the movie. Hats off to M. M. Keeravani who has given us numerous melodious songs throughout his illustrious career.
3) The comedy was fabulous. A lot of small characters were woven into the story that provided a good support to the lead actor Sunil. The comic timing of Sunil was perfect too. A lot of comedy came from comic situation without any vulgar innuendos. The character of an old dilapidated cycle brought peals of laughter by its mere presence. The comic situations in the train were very believable.
4) The movie shows how a good movie can be made without extravagant foreign locales. A rustic village setting, a stark rocky landscape beautifully captured by the camera and characters that look like people you know in your everyday life. These simple settings make the film work so well.
5) The dances and the attention to detail in this movie is simply marvelous. The first song is pictured beautifully. My favorite shot was the cars colliding in the air; I would have loved to watch that in 3D. I also found it very amusing that in the song depicting hero Sunil’s bad luck, he is shown buying bitter gourd (Karela or kakarkaya).
All in all, Maryada Ramanna Rocks!!!
